Product Description
This is an original 1937 halftone print of a woman teaching piano lessons in Greater New York as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was a part of the New Deal, and employed millions of people to construct public buildings and operate literacy and art projects. The caption writes, “Unemployed musicians teach mothers’ piano classes as well as classes for the children. The demand for lessons swamps them. In Greater New York federal music teachers reach 40,000 children and adults every week. In Oklahoma, a state with a total population of 2,500,000, 300,000 individuals have had instruction.
